There's only one: Keano

Get on the wrong side of this man, and you'll most likely get bashed.

But jokes aside, Roy Keane, currently managing Ipswich, was as combative a captain as we've ever seen pull on a United shirt.

And after sitting through the last two or three matches that we've played, outside that fantastic result against Liverpool, it's become more obvious than ever that we're missing the bite in midfield which that wily Irishman once brought week in, week out.

So who's going to step up to take up that mantle?

Certainly, it doesn't seem like Anderson would.

Maybe I'm being a bit harsh...

Maybe if Darren Fletcher gets his act together after a couple of sub-par performances, he'll go back to playing the game we're used to seeing from him: that hardworking style which saw Arsène label him "anti-football".

But maybe, a lack of "bite" wouldn't be a problem for us on the pitch for long if he took over...

Speculation is rife—well, it will be sooner or later—as to who'll take over after Sir Alex hangs up his managerial reins. And while I'm still holding out for Jose Mourinho to be that man (and another rumour, just for good measure), I don't see anything wrong with someone who knows exactly how things work at United, and the standards expected from any team which plays out in the Theater of Dreams.

Granted, there are a whole host of former Reds who'd fit the bill for our next manager; Steve Bruce, Mark Hughes, Laurent Blanc's been mentioned - and I feel that it's only right that someone who had played for us should take over. (Except you, Jose! You're welcome any time!)

But if we want someone fiery, someone who'll instill a winning mentality through pure, unadulterated kicking-the-shit-out-of-them-if-they-don't, then I see no one but Roy Keane.

He spent 12 years in Manchester, joining in the year I was born, and made 480 appearances for us, around 300 of those as captain. Sure, people think about his hot-temper and tendency to get sent off, but in those 12 years, he won 17 trophies. I dunno about you, but that screams "success" to me.

"You did NOT ask for one sugar."

He had a pretty good managerial record with Sunderland, too, before he left them - he took them from the depths of the relegation zone in the Championship after like 4 games and brought them up to top the Championship and gain automatic promotion.

It seems he doesn't lose to many games with Ipswich - 35.38% win percentage, and 27.69% loss percentage. And that's Ipswich...

If it were down to me, and Jose Mourinho had already declined the offer, I'd ask Keano to come down to Old Trafford to have a look-see and see if he'd be willing to take the reins. I'm sure he'd relish the challenge, and he'd certainly fuck people up if they thought otherwise.

Thoughts, anyone?

  1. Keano was a general for us. I can only dream of another player like him in our midfield.

But yeah, in one word: CLUTCH!!!
