Gameday: Newcastle @ Old Trafford
The 411:
First game of the season for us today, and I can't wait for it to kick off. Both teams are looking to start the season strong for different reasons. United are hoping to start with a win to match Chelsea's demolition of West Brom and show the league that they mean business after the disappointing second place finish last year. Newcastle on the other hand, are hoping for a win on their return to Premier League football and to show the rest of the teams that they're here to stay.
Chasing the Title:
Well, we have the chance to claim our first points of the season here and the message is quite simple - Don't blow it. As I've mentioned earlier, Chelsea have already started by hammering West Brom and we need to respond with a victory of our own. It's not like this game is going to decide the league or anything, but it sure will help if we can get off to a winning start.
Where We Stand:
I'd put a league table here showing our position but it's pretty useless seeing as it's easier to use this formula:
If we win by seven goals or more, we're top of the league.
Players to Look Out For:
United old boy Alan Smith is a Magpie now and he may start against us if he shakes off an ankle injury. Newcastle's key man this season is without a doubt, Andy Carroll. He was instrumental in Newcastle's promotion to the Premier League, scoring 17 goals in last season's edition of the Championship.
On the Home Front:
We are looking quite healthy aside from the knee injuries to Rio Ferdinand, Anderson and Owen Hargreaves (Why God? WHY!?!?!?). Other than that it's up to Fergie as to who gets to run out at Old Trafford first this season.
TSR's Thoughts:
1. Can Rooney forget about his disappointing World Cup and light up Old Trafford again this season?
2. Will Chicharito play? And if so, how will he fare in the physical battles of the Premier League?
3. Who will our right back be?
4. Can Berbatov break free from the shackles of disappointment that were holding him back last year?
Game on.
